Adelaide AVFest 2009

FIAP 2009/02, APS 2009/02

This year the ninth Adelaide AVFEST was held from the 20th to 22nd of March 2009. We had a record number of entries this year, 95 from 70 entrants and 11 countries. Festivals such as this can only happen if the AV sequence makers out there enter. It was pleasing to see over 30 new entrants in this festival, as well as receiving sequences from familiar authors. The three judges, Richard Venus (AUS), Graham Hawkins SSAPS (AUS) and Ian Bateman MPAGB (UK) had a difficult task not only because of the number of sequences, but also because of the quality and various styles of sequences.

The advent of the ‘digital age’ has meant that authors are now able to produce more creative sequences. The available computer software now enables both image editing and animation of sequences. Similarly the computing and graphic power is also increasing, so that the total effect can be some very awesome sequences. We saw many examples of this during the festival, the bar has certainly been lifted.

At the same time though, the sequence that doesn’t use ‘clever graphics’, but relies rather on good images put together with appropriate audio and a strong general concept still holds its own in any festival. This was also evident during the festival.

Congratulations to all the winners and those who received acceptances.
