Hi Peter
Many thanks for publishing my message about Clarence's. No contacts yet but it's early days.

Having just read your 'about' page I've noticed that like me you're an ex-SBGS pupil so thought you might be interested in the site I run at http://www.sbgs.co.uk

Kind regards
David

I was intigued to read the post by Peter Jagger as I'm in the process of putting together a web site about Clarence's, Paul Mountain's club in Crown Street.

If Peter reads this could he possibly contact me at david@ai5.com regarding the photos or indeed any memories he has of the club. It would great to be able to put copies on the site as they are very thin on the ground.

If anyone else has any memories of Clarence's please get in touch.

To Peter Coles, thanks for this site and for publishing John Wharton's excellent Plebs book. I bought four copies to distribute to friends around the world. I understand from John that it's now sold out. Time for a second edition?

In answer to Peter Jagger's question...yes, I am the same David van de Gevel from Stoney Lane, Lightcliffe. But are you the same Peter Jagger from Hipperholme. Re. the Plebeians Jazz Club: I wrote a short(mercifully!) article in the Down Your Way magazine of my reminiscences accompanied by photos kindly allowed by Peter Wharton. Can't remember the month but, then, I'm not 17 anymore.

Re Plebs. Can't say that I remember Mods and scooters. It's probably the only club that I was actually thrown INTO by a bouncer - I shot down the (more than) 4 steps and cannoned into the wall at the end. There must be some excellent record-keepers about because I can only vaguely remember the odd band on stage. It was a bit like a pond in that when it rained it filled with water - steamy! Order was kept in the disco by the threat of a Cliff Richard record - that worked nicely. Shot him (for tele) some years later and he felt the need for THREE minders, and that was on private property - oh dear! but what intiguing little beasts they were. Upper George landlords - I was nearing 15 at the time, Lewis Barrett with his blue tassled darts cap on display, and then Jack Bunting having returned from a very hot weaving shed in India. Cannabis was just coming in at that time, say '63, but not my scene.
It's queer looking back - the imports from Tamala Motortown played at the Victoria Lounge were treated almost as contraband.
Now who's this David van de Gevel? Surely not from Stoney Lane ? With regard to photographs I won't have any of the interior of the Jazz Club, but might, if I haven't junked them , have some of Mountain's club in Crown St. where I did see Genisis and Kevin Ayers & The Whole World - guess at '71/72. The pics themselves are of a fashion shoot in the empty club - that is before we were asked to leave.
And for the site owners here I've got some bang-up-to date pretty punchy digital pics and a selection of short stories.

Peter Jagger

Thanks for that. I will pass your comments on to the Author, John Wharton.
Best wishes,
Peter

I am wanting to write a short article of reminiscences about the Plebeians Jazz Club and your publication of 2001, Plebs,The Halifax jazz Club 1961-1986, contains one or two photos I would like to include, providing I can obtain the copywright holders' permission. Could you tell me how this might be gained? Regards Dave van de Gevel,Zakynthos , Greece

I am pleased for you to use images from Plebans Jazz Club for your article.
